Scale Overview
The Masculine Gender Identity Scale for Females (MGIS) was developed by Ray Blanchard, Kurt Freund (1983). It is designed to measure Masculine gender identity in females. The scale is intended for use with Females (Part A: general; Part B: homosexual females).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 29 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Part A: Childhood and General Gender Identity, Part B: Homosexual Female Gender Identity.

Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 48. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Masculine Gender Identity: 0 – 15
- Moderate Masculine Gender Identity: 16 – 31
- High Masculine Gender Identity: 32 – 48
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Part A alpha = .89, Part B alpha = .92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
