The Marin Acculturation Scale – Revised (MAS-R) was developed by Gupta, R. & Yick, A. (2001). It is designed to measure Acculturation. The scale is intended for use with Chinese Americans.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Language preference, Language preferred for media, Ethnic social relations.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Only Chinese, 2 = More Chinese than English / American, 3 = Both Equally, 4 = More English / American than Chinese, 5 = Only English / American.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Acculturation (Highly oriented toward Chinese culture): 1 – 2
- Bicultural (Equally oriented toward both cultures): 3 – 3
- High Acculturation (Highly oriented toward American culture): 4 – 5
