Scale Overview
The Male Body Image Self-Consciousness Scale – M-BISC was developed by Lorraine K. McDonagh, Todd G. Morrison, Brian E. McGuire (2008). It is designed to measure Body image self-consciousness during sexual intimacy. The scale is intended for use with Men (with or without sexual experience).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 17 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Don't Know, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 17 to 85. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total Score (higher scores denote greater levels of body image self-consciousness during physical intimacy): 17 – 85
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
