Scale Overview
The Life Satisfaction Index for the Third Age – Short Form (LSITA-SF) was developed by Andrew J. Barrett & Peter J. Murk (2006). It is designed to measure Life Satisfaction. The scale is intended for use with Older adults (Third Age).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Disagree Somewhat, 4 = Agree Somewhat, 5 = Agree, 6 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 12 to 72. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Life Satisfaction: 12 – 32
- Moderate Life Satisfaction: 33 – 52
- High Life Satisfaction: 53 – 72

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
