Scale Overview
The Leader-Member Exchange Scale – German Translation (LMX-7) was developed by Graen & Uhl-Bien (German translation by Schyns & Paul) (1999). It is designed to measure Leader-Member Exchange. The scale is intended for use with Employees.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Lowest rating (varies by item), 2 = Below average rating, 3 = Moderate rating, 4 = Above average rating, 5 = Highest rating (varies by item).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 7 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low LMX (formal relationship, out-group): 7 – 19
- Moderate LMX: 20 – 25
- High LMX (positive relationship, in-group): 26 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha = .92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
