Scale Overview
The Job-Family Role Strain Scale was developed by Halcyone H. Bohen, Anamaria Viveros-Long (1981). It is designed to measure Work-family role strain. The scale is intended for use with Employed parents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 19 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Always, 2 = Most of the time, 3 = Some of the time, 4 = Rarely, 5 = Never.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 19 to 95. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Role Strain: 19 – 44
- Moderate Role Strain: 45 – 70
- High Role Strain: 71 – 95
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.88 – 0.91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
