Job Control, Cognitive Demand, and Production Responsibility Scales
Measures the levels of job control (timing and method), cognitive demand (monitoring and problem-solving), and production responsibility experienced by an employee.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Job Control, Cognitive Demand, and Production Responsibility Scales was developed by Jackson, P.R., Wall, T. D., Martin, R., & Davids, K. (1993). It is designed to measure Job control, cognitive demand, and production responsibility. The scale is intended for use with Employees / Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Timing Control, Method Control, Monitoring Demand, Problem-Solving Demand, Production Responsibility.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Timing Control | 1,2,3,4 | 4 |
| Method Control | 5,6,7,8,9,10 | 6 |
| Monitoring Demand | 11,12,13,14 | 4 |
| Problem-Solving Demand | 15,16,17 | 3 |
| Production Responsibility | 18,19,20,21,22 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Just a little, 3 = A moderate amount, 4 = Quite a lot, 5 = A great deal.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 22 to 110. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low overall job demands and control: 22 – 51
- Moderate overall job demands and control: 52 – 81
- High overall job demands and control: 82 – 110
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Timing control: .79-.85; Method control: .77-.80; Monitoring demand: .73-.75; Problem-solving demand: .50-.67; Production responsibility: .86-.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
