Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Job Cognitions Scale – JCS was developed by Larry J. Williams & Stella E. Anderson (1991). It is designed to measure Job Cognitions. The scale is intended for use with Working adults / employees.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Intrinsic Job Cognitions, Extrinsic Job Cognitions, General.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Intrinsic Job Cognitions | 1,3,4,9,10,11,15,16 | 8 |
| Extrinsic Job Cognitions | 5,6,13,14,17,18,19 | 7 |
| General | 2,7,8,12,20 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never true, 2 = Rarely true, 3 = Sometimes true, 4 = Often true, 5 = Always true.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 20 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Job Cognitions: 20 – 46
- Moderate Job Cognitions: 47 – 73
- High Job Cognitions: 74 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Intrinsic subscale alpha = .78, Extrinsic subscale alpha = .71.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
