Scale Overview
The Inventory of the Self-Concepts was developed by John J. Sherwood (1962). It is designed to measure Self-concept and self-identity discrepancy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly align with left characteristic, 2 = , 3 = , 4 = , 5 = , 6 = Neutral / Middle, 7 = , 8 = , 9 = , 10 = , 11 = Strongly align with right characteristic.
The scale includes 7 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.55 – 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
