Scale Overview
The Inventory of Interpersonal Situations – IIS was developed by Rien Van Dam-Baggen, Floris Kraaimaat (1999). It is designed to measure Social anxiety and social skills. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 35 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Initiating Contact, Refusal and Assertiveness, Expressing Positive Feelings, Expressing Negative Feelings, Expressing Opinions, Receiving Appreciation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: Discomfort: 1 = None, Discomfort: 2 = A little, Discomfort: 3 = A fair amount, Discomfort: 4 = Much, Discomfort: 5 = Very much, Frequency: 1 = Never, Frequency: 2 = Seldom, Frequency: 3 = Sometimes, Frequency: 4 = Often, Frequency: 5 = Always.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 35 to 175. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Discomfort / High Frequency: 35 – 70
- Moderate Discomfort / Moderate Frequency: 71 – 105
- High Discomfort / Low Frequency: 106 – 140
- Very High Discomfort / Very Low Frequency: 141 – 175
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha > 0.90).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
