Scale Overview
The Inventory of Attitudes Toward Seeking Mental Health Services – IASMHS was developed by Mackenzie, C. S., Knox, V. J., Gekoski, W. L., & Macaulay, H. (2004). It is designed to measure Attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Psychological Openness, Help-Seeking Propensity, Indifference to Stigma.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Disagree, 1 = Somewhat disagree, 2 = Undecided, 3 = Somewhat agree, 4 = Agree.
The scale includes 15 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 96. Interpretation guidelines:
- Negative attitudes toward seeking help: 0 – 32
- Neutral or mixed attitudes toward seeking help: 33 – 64
- Positive attitudes toward seeking help: 65 – 96
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.76 to 0.87 for subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
