Scale Overview
The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale – Short Form (IUS-12) was developed by Carleton, R. N., Norton, M. A. P. J., & Asmundson, G. J. G. (2007). It is designed to measure Intolerance of Uncertainty. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Prospective Anxiety, Inhibitory Anxiety.
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Prospective Anxiety |
1,2,3,4,5,6,7 |
7 |
| Inhibitory Anxiety |
8,9,10,11,12 |
5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all characteristic of me, 2 = A little characteristic of me, 3 = Somewhat characteristic of me, 4 = Very characteristic of me, 5 = Entirely characteristic of me.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Intolerance of Uncertainty: 12 – 27
- Moderate Intolerance of Uncertainty: 28 – 43
- High Intolerance of Uncertainty: 44 – 60
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
