Scale Overview
The International Prostate Symptom Score – IPSS was developed by American Urological Association (1992). It is designed to measure Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) severity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all / None / Delighted, 1 = Less than 1 in 5 times / 1 time / Pleased, 2 = Less than half the time / 2 times / Mostly Satisfied, 3 = About half the time / 3 times / Mixed, 4 = More than half the time / 4 times / Mostly Dissatisfied, 5 = Almost always / 5 or more times / Unhappy, 6 = Terrible (QoL only).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Mild symptoms: 0 – 7
- Moderate symptoms: 8 – 19
- Severe symptoms: 20 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.80 – 0.86.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
