Scale Overview
The Inter-Role Conflict Scale – IRCS was developed by Thompson, H. B., & Werner, J. M. (1997). It is designed to measure Inter-role conflict and facilitation. The scale is intended for use with Working adults / Employees.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: -2 = Harmful or conflicting effect, -1 = Somewhat harmful/conflicting effect, 0 = No effect, 1 = Somewhat facilitative or helpful effect, 2 = Very facilitative or helpful effect.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from -18 to 18. Interpretation guidelines:
- High Perceived Conflict: -18 – -1
- Neutral / No Overall Effect: 0 – 0
- High Perceived Facilitation: 1 – 18
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not applicable due to formative matrix scoring method.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
