Scale Overview
The Institutional Renewal Scale – IRS was developed by R. J. Crowley (1976). It is designed to measure Attitudes toward educational innovation. The scale is intended for use with Secondary school teachers and educational professionals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Mildly Disagree, 4 = Mildly Agree, 5 = Agree, 6 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 12 to 72. Interpretation guidelines:
- Negative attitude toward educational innovation: 12 – 31
- Neutral or mixed attitude toward educational innovation: 32 – 52
- Positive attitude toward educational innovation: 53 – 72
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.88 (9-item version), 0.82 (12-item version).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
