Scale Overview
The Inspiration Scale – IS was developed by Todd M. Thrash & Andrew J. Elliot (2003). It is designed to measure Inspiration. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Inspiration Frequency, Inspiration Intensity.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = 1 (Never / Not at all), 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7 (Very often / Very deeply or strongly).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 8 to 56. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Inspiration: 8 – 24
- Moderate Inspiration: 25 – 40
- High Inspiration: 41 – 56
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Frequency subscale alpha = .90 to .94; Intensity subscale alpha = .90 to .95.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
