Scale Overview
The Individual Innovativeness Scale – IS was developed by H. T. Hurt, K. Joseph, & C. D. Cook (1977). It is designed to measure Individual Innovativeness. The scale is intended for use with General population.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 14 to 94. Interpretation guidelines:
- Laggards/Traditionalists: 14 – 45
- Late Majority: 46 – 56
- Early Majority: 57 – 68
- Early Adopters: 69 – 80
- Innovators: 81 – 94
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
