Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Indicators of a Double Standard and Generational Difference in Sexual Attitudes was developed by Ilsa L. Lottes, Martin S. Weinberg (1992). It is designed to measure Perceived double standards and generational differences in sexual attitudes. The scale is intended for use with High school and university students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Parental Factor, Peer Factor.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Parental Factor | 1,2 | 2 |
| Peer Factor | 3,4,5,6 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Much more liberal, 2 = Slightly more liberal, 3 = The same, 4 = Slightly more conservative, 5 = Much more conservative.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from -2 to 2. Interpretation guidelines:
- Female-permissive double standard (for difference scores): -2 – -1
- Egalitarian, no double standard (for difference scores): 0 – 0
- Male-permissive double standard (for difference scores): 1 – 2
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Parental factor alpha: .60 – .80; Peer factor alpha: .78 – .85.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
