Scale Overview
The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Phobia Scale (IAPT Phobia Scale) was developed by UK Department of Health / NHS (adapted from Marks & Mathews) (2008). It is designed to measure Phobic avoidance. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 3 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia, Specific Phobias.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Would not avoid it, 1 = 1, 2 = Slightly avoid it, 3 = 3, 4 = Definitely avoid it, 5 = 5, 6 = Markedly avoid it, 7 = 7, 8 = Always avoid it.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 24. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total Score Range (higher scores indicate greater avoidance): 0 – 24
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
