Scale Overview
The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Phobia Scale (IAPT Phobia Scale) was developed by NHS England (IAPT) (2011). It is designed to measure Phobic avoidance. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 3 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Social Phobia, Agoraphobia, Specific Phobia.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Would not avoid it, 1 = Slightly avoid it (1), 2 = Slightly avoid it (2), 3 = Definitely avoid it (3), 4 = Definitely avoid it (4), 5 = Markedly avoid it (5), 6 = Markedly avoid it (6), 7 = Always avoid it (7), 8 = Always avoid it (8).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 24. Interpretation guidelines:
- Subclinical avoidance: 0 – 7
- Clinical level of avoidance: 8 – 24
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
