Scale Overview
The Hurt Feelings Scale (HFF) was developed by Mark R. Leary & Carolyn Springer (2001). It is designed to measure Hurt feelings and emotional sensitivity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all characteristic of me, 2 = Slightly characteristic of me, 3 = Moderately characteristic of me, 4 = Very characteristic of me, 5 = Extremely characteristic of me.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 6 to 30. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low sensitivity to hurt feelings: 6 – 13
- Moderate sensitivity to hurt feelings: 14 – 21
- High sensitivity to hurt feelings: 22 – 30
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
