Scale Overview
The Hurlbert Index of Sexual Fantasy (HISF) was developed by David F. Hurlbert, Carol Apt (1993). It is designed to measure Sexual fantasy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 25 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Never, 1 = Rarely, 2 = Some of the time, 3 = Most of the time, 4 = All of the time.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low sexual fantasy discomfort (High fantasy/comfort): 0 – 25
- Mild sexual fantasy discomfort: 26 – 50
- Moderate sexual fantasy discomfort: 51 – 75
- High sexual fantasy discomfort (Low fantasy/comfort): 76 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
