Scale Overview
The Hurlbert Index of Sexual Compatibility – HISC was developed by David F. Hurlbert, L. C. White, R. D. Powell, & C. Apt (1993). It is designed to measure Sexual Compatibility. The scale is intended for use with Adults in relationships.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 25 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = All of the time, 1 = Most of the time, 2 = Some of the time, 3 = Rarely, 4 = Never.
The scale includes 14 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Very Low Sexual Compatibility: 0 – 25
- Low Sexual Compatibility: 26 – 50
- Moderate Sexual Compatibility: 51 – 75
- High Sexual Compatibility: 76 – 100
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
