Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Homonegative Microaggressions Scale – HMS was developed by A.J. Wright & R.T. Wegner (2012). It is designed to measure Homonegative Microaggressions. The scale is intended for use with LGB individuals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Assumed Deviance, Second-Class Citizen, Assumptions of Gay Culture, Stereotypical Knowledge and Behavior.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Assumed Deviance | 1,14,15,16,17,19,20,28,40 | 9 |
| Second-Class Citizen | 12,21,22,34,35,37,41,42 | 8 |
| Assumptions of Gay Culture | 10,24,26,32,39 | 5 |
| Stereotypical Knowledge and Behavior | 6,7,8,9,29 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Hardly ever/never/not at all, 2 = Occasionally, but rarely/a little bit, 3 = Occasionally/from time to time/somewhat, 4 = Consistently/often/a good deal, 5 = Constantly/a great deal, 6 = Not applicable.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 45 to 225. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Frequency of Microaggressions: 45 – 90
- Moderate Frequency of Microaggressions: 91 – 135
- High Frequency of Microaggressions: 136 – 180
- Very High Frequency of Microaggressions: 181 – 225
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Full scale HMS: 0.95, Assumed Deviance: 0.85, Second-Class Citizen: 0.83, Stereotypical Knowledge and Behavior: 0.82, Assumptions of Gay Culture: 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
