Homonegative Microaggressions Scale – HMS
Measures the frequency of subtle, homonegative microaggressions experienced by LGB individuals.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Homonegative Microaggressions Scale – HMS was developed by A.J. Wright & R.T. Wegner (2012). It is designed to measure Homonegative Microaggressions. The scale is intended for use with LGB individuals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Assumed Deviance, Second-Class Citizen, Assumptions of Gay Culture, Stereotypical Knowledge and Behavior, General.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Assumed Deviance | 1,14,15,16,17,19,20,28,40 | 9 |
| Second-Class Citizen | 12,21,22,34,35,37,41,42 | 8 |
| Assumptions of Gay Culture | 10,24,26,32,39 | 5 |
| Stereotypical Knowledge and Behavior | 6,7,8,9,29 | 5 |
| General | 2,3,4,5,11,13,18,23,25,27,30,31,33,36,38,43,44,45 | 18 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Hardly ever/never/not at all, 2 = Occasionally, but rarely/a little bit, 3 = Occasionally/from time to time/somewhat, 4 = Consistently/often/a good deal, 5 = Constantly/a great deal, 6 = Not applicable.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.95 (Full Scale), 0.85 (Assumed Deviance), 0.83 (Second-Class Citizen), 0.82 (Stereotypical Knowledge and Behavior), 0.84 (Assumptions of Gay Culture).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
