Scale Overview
The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale – SRRS was developed by Thomas H. Holmes, Richard H. Rahe (1967). It is designed to measure Life Event Stress. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 42 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous Yes/No format.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 1438. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low susceptibility to stress-related illness: 0 – 149
- Medium susceptibility to stress-related illness: 150 – 299
- High susceptibility to stress-related illness: 300 – 1438

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of N/A.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
