Scale Overview
The Highly Sensitive Person Scale – HSP Scale was developed by Elaine Aron, Ph.D., and Arthur Aron, Ph.D. (1997). It is designed to measure Sensory Processing Sensitivity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 27 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at All, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = Moderately, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = Extremely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 0. Interpretation guidelines:
- Highly Sensitive (if scoring 14 or more items as 5 or higher): 0 – 0
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Good internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
