Scale Overview
The Health Utilities Index Mark 3 – HUI3 was developed by David Feeny, William Furlong, George W. Torrance, Michael Boyle (1995). It is designed to measure Health-Related Quality of Life. The scale is intended for use with General and clinical populations.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items organized into 8 factors/subscales: Vision, Hearing, Speech, Ambulation, Dexterity, Emotion, Cognition, Pain.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Level 1, 2 = Level 2, 3 = Level 3, 4 = Level 4, 5 = Level 5, 6 = Level 6.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 1. Interpretation guidelines:
- Health states worse than dead: 0 – 0
- Severe disability: 0 – 0
- Mild to moderate disability: 0 – 0
- Perfect health: 1 – 1
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High test-retest reliability and construct validity reported in literature.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
