The Hare Self-Esteem Scale – HSS was developed by Bruce R. Hare (1975). It is designed to measure Self-Esteem. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and children (ages 10 and older).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Peer Self-Esteem, Home Self-Esteem, School Self-Esteem.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Agree, 4 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 15 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 30 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Esteem: 30 – 59
- Moderate Self-Esteem: 60 – 89
- High Self-Esteem: 90 – 120
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.74 – 0.83.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
