Scale Overview
The Gender-Equitable Men Scale – GEM Scale was developed by Julie Pulerwitz, Gary Barker (2008). It is designed to measure Attitudes toward gender norms. The scale is intended for use with Young men and adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Inequitable Gender Norms, Equitable Gender Norms.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Disagree, 2 = Partially Agree, 3 = Agree.
The scale includes 17 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 24 to 72. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Gender Equity: 24 – 40
- Moderate Gender Equity: 41 – 56
- High Gender Equity: 57 – 72
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha values typically range from 0.70 to 0.80 for the subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
