Scale Overview
The Gay Peer Crowds Questionnaire – GPCQ (Self-Identification Subscale) was developed by Betty S. Lai, Brian L. B. Willoughby, Nathan D. Doty, Neena M. Malik (2008). It is designed to measure Gay peer crowd affiliation and identification. The scale is intended for use with Self-identified gay men.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 12 factors/subscales: Activist Identification, Bear Identification, Artsy Identification, Goth/Alternative Identification, Circuit Partier Identification, Suburban Identification, Muscle Boy Identification, Professional Identification, Leather Man Identification, Drag Queen Identification, Granola Identification, Bois/Twinks Identification.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Rarely, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Mostly, 5 = Very Much.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Identification: 1 – 2
- Moderate Identification: 3 – 3
- High Identification: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of N/A (items are analyzed individually).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
