Scale Overview
The Gay Identity Questionnaire – GIQ was developed by S. Brady & W.J. Buse (1994). It is designed to measure Homosexual Identity Formation. The scale is intended for use with Gay and lesbian individuals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Identity Confusion, Identity Comparison, Identity Tolerance, Identity Acceptance, Identity Pride, Identity Synthesis.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous True/False format.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Tolerance (0.76), Acceptance (0.71), Pride (0.44), Synthesis (0.78).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
