Scale Overview
The Gatehouse Bullying Scale – GBS was developed by Lyndal Bond, Sarah Wolfe, Michelle Tollit, Helen Butler, & George Patton (2007). It is designed to measure Bullying Victimization. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and secondary school students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 4 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not bullied, 1 = Bullied but not frequently and not upset, 2 = Bullied, either frequently or upset, but not both, 3 = Bullied frequently and upset.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 12. Interpretation guidelines:
- No bullying victimization: 0 – 0
- Mild bullying victimization: 1 – 4
- Moderate bullying victimization: 5 – 8
- Severe bullying victimization: 9 – 12
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
