Scale Overview
The Gang Membership Inventory (GMI) was developed by M.B. Pillen & R.C. Hoewing-Roberson (1992). It is designed to measure Gang Involvement and Membership. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and youth.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 15 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Gang Exposure, Gang Participation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous Yes/No format.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 15. Interpretation guidelines:
- No Gang Involvement: 0 – 0
- Gang Exposure / Low Risk: 1 – 5
- Active Gang Participation / High Risk: 6 – 15
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
