Scale Overview
The Fundamentalism Scale-Revised (FS-R) was developed by Richard L. Gorsuch & C. S. Smith (1983). It is designed to measure Religious Fundamentalism. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 33 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: A = Agree, D = Disagree.
The scale includes 15 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 33. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Fundamentalism (Liberal/Humanistic View): 0 – 11
- Moderate Fundamentalism: 12 – 22
- High Fundamentalism (Orthodox/Literalist View): 23 – 33
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.76 (K-Richardson formula for original Broen scale).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
