Measures the individual differences in the types of motivation or self-regulation underlying participation in a specific friendship.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Friendship Self-Regulation Questionnaire – SRQ-F was developed by Edward L. Deci & Richard M. Ryan (1989). It is designed to measure Self-Regulation and Autonomy in Friendship. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Intrinsic Motivation, Identified Regulation, Introjected Regulation, External Regulation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Intrinsic Motivation | 2,4,6,10,13,19 | 6 |
| Identified Regulation | 8,12,16,17 | 4 |
| Introjected Regulation | 1,5,11,14,18 | 5 |
| External Regulation | 3,7,9,15,20 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Subscale scores are typically calculated as the mean of the items within each subscale, ranging from 1 to 7. A Relative Autonomy Index (RAI) can also be computed as: 2 x Intrinsic + Identified – Introjected – 2 x External.: 1 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Typically acceptable to high internal consistency across subscales (Cronbach's alpha > .70).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
