Scale Overview
The Frequency of Forgetting Scale-10 (FOF-10) was developed by Elizabeth M. Zelinski, Michael J. Gilewski (2004). It is designed to measure Memory Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Always, 2 = Almost Always, 3 = Usually, 4 = About Half the Time, 5 = Occasionally, 6 = Once in a While, 7 = Never.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 10 to 70. Interpretation guidelines:
- Frequent forgetting (Low memory self-efficacy): 10 – 30
- Moderate forgetting: 31 – 50
- Infrequent forgetting (High memory self-efficacy): 51 – 70
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.87.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
