Flow State Scale – FSS
Measures the depth of flow state experienced by an individual during task completion.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Flow State Scale – FSS was developed by Jackson, S. A. & Marsh, H. W. (1996). It is designed to measure Flow State. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Concentration on task at hand, Loss of self-consciousness, Transformation of time.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Concentration on task at hand | 1,4,7,10 | 4 |
| Loss of self-consciousness | 2,5,8,11 | 4 |
| Transformation of time | 3,6,9,12 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Often, 4 = Very often, 5 = Almost always.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Flow Experience: 12 – 27
- Moderate Flow Experience: 28 – 44
- High Flow Experience: 45 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified in source text.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
