Scale Overview
The Flourishing Scale – FS was developed by Ed Diener, Daniel Wirtz, William Tov, Chu Kim-Prieto, Dong-won Choi, Shigehiro Oishi, Robert Biswas-Diener (2009). It is designed to measure Psychological Well-Being. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Slightly disagree, 4 = Mixed or neither agree nor disagree, 5 = Slightly agree, 6 = Agree, 7 = Strongly agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 8 to 56. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total score range (higher scores represent higher psychological well-being): 8 – 56
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.87.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
