Scale Overview
The Female Sexual Distress Scale—Revised (FSDS-R) was developed by Leonard R. Derogatis, Robert Pyke, Julie McCormack, Adria Hunter, Gale Harding (2008). It is designed to measure Sexually related personal distress. The scale is intended for use with Women (pre- and postmenopausal).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 13 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Never, 1 = Rarely, 2 = Occasionally, 3 = Frequently, 4 = Always.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 52. Interpretation guidelines:
- Non-clinical sexual distress: 0 – 10
- Clinical level of sexual distress: 11 – 52
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of >.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
