Scale Overview
The Fears of Compassion Scales – FCS was developed by Paul Gilbert, Karin McEwan, Marilia Matos, & Alexandra Rivis (2011). It is designed to measure Fear of Compassion. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 38 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Expressing compassion for others, Responding to compassion from others, Expressing kindness and compassion towards yourself.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Don't agree at all, 1 = 1, 2 = Somewhat agree, 3 = 3, 4 = Completely agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 152. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Fear of Compassion: 0 – 50
- Moderate Fear of Compassion: 51 – 100
- High Fear of Compassion: 101 – 152
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha: 0.84-0.92 (students), 0.76-0.86 (therapists).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
