Scale Overview
The Fear of Negative Appearance Evaluation Scale – FNAES was developed by Lundgren, J. D., Anderson, D. A., & Thompson, J. K. (2004). It is designed to measure Fear of negative appearance evaluation. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Slightly, 3 = Moderately, 4 = Very, 5 = Extremely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 6 to 30. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low fear of negative appearance evaluation: 6 – 13
- Moderate fear of negative appearance evaluation: 14 – 21
- High fear of negative appearance evaluation: 22 – 30
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
