Scale Overview
The Fear of Negative Appearance Evaluation Scale – FNAES was developed by Lundgren JD, Anderson DA, Thompson JK (2004). It is designed to measure Fear of negative appearance evaluation. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not At All, 2 = Slightly, 3 = Moderately, 4 = Very, 5 = Extremely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 6 to 30. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low fear of negative appearance evaluation: 6 – 13
- Moderate fear of negative appearance evaluation: 14 – 21
- High fear of negative appearance evaluation: 22 – 30
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
