The Fear of Missing Out Scale – FoMOs was developed by Andrew K. Przybylski, Kou Murayama, Cody R. DeHaan, & Valerie Gladwell (2013). It is designed to measure Fear of Missing Out. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all true of me, 2 = Slightly true of me, 3 = Moderately true of me, 4 = Very true of me, 5 = Extremely true of me.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Fear of Missing Out: 1 – 2
- Moderate Fear of Missing Out: 2 – 3
- High Fear of Missing Out: 3 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha = .87 to .90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
