Scale Overview
The Family APGAR was developed by Gabriel Smilkstein (1978). It is designed to measure Family Functioning. The scale is intended for use with General population, adults, and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, Resolve.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Hardly ever, 1 = Some of the time, 2 = Almost always.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 10. Interpretation guidelines:
- Severely Dysfunctional Family: 0 – 3
- Moderately Dysfunctional Family: 4 – 6
- Functional Family: 7 – 10
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
