Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Masculinity (M), Femininity (F), Masculinity-Femininity (M-F), Negative Masculinity (M-), Negative Femininity (F-).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Masculinity (M) | 3,9,16,26,28,31,33,40 | 8 |
| Femininity (F) | 5,11,13,15,20,25,35,36 | 8 |
| Masculinity-Femininity (M-F) | 1,6,8,17,18,21,23,30 | 8 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Extreme Left Characteristic, 1 = Near Left Characteristic, 2 = Neutral / Middle, 3 = Near Right Characteristic, 4 = Extreme Right Characteristic.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 32. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low: 0 – 10
- Average: 11 – 21
- High: 22 – 32
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach alphas: 0.78 (M-F), 0.82 (F), 0.85 (M).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
