Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status-Revised Version (EOM-EIS) was developed by L. D. Bennion & G. R. Adams (1986). It is designed to measure Ego Identity Status. The scale is intended for use with Late adolescents and college students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 64 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Diffusion, Foreclosure, Moratorium, Achievement.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Diffusion | 1,2,4,6,7,10,16,19,23,25,29,30,52,53,56,59 | 16 |
| Foreclosure | 3,17,21,24,27,28,37,38,39,41,44,50,58,62,63,64 | 16 |
| Moratorium | 5,9,11,12,14,26,31,32,34,36,43,47,48,54,57,61 | 16 |
| Achievement | 8,13,15,18,20,22,33,35,40,42,45,46,49,51,55,60 | 16 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly agree, 2 = Moderately agree, 3 = Agree, 4 = Disagree, 5 = Moderately disagree, 6 = Strongly disagree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 16 to 96. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Endorsement: 16 – 48
- High Endorsement: 49 – 96
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Diffusion (alpha .68); Foreclosure (alpha .90); Moratorium (alpha .73); Achievement (alpha .66).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
