Scale Overview
The Episode-Specific Conflict Tactics Scale – ESCT was developed by Tammy Lowery Zacchilli (2007). It is designed to measure Conflict Tactics. The scale is intended for use with Couples / Adults in relationships.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Integrative Tactics, Distributive Tactics, Avoidance Tactics.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all true of me, 2 = A little bit true of me, 3 = Moderately true of me, 4 = Quite a bit true of me, 5 = Very true of me.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Use of Tactic: 1 – 2
- Moderate Use of Tactic: 3 – 3
- High Use of Tactic: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
