Scale Overview
The Environmental Worry Scale – EWS was developed by Rosemarie Bowler & Ralf Schwarzer (1991). It is designed to measure Environmental Worry. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 17 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all true, 2 = Barely true, 3 = Moderately true, 4 = Exactly true.
The scale includes 9 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 17 to 68. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Environmental Worry: 17 – 34
- Moderate Environmental Worry: 35 – 51
- High Environmental Worry: 52 – 68
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
