Empathizing-Systemizing Test – EQ-SQ
A self-report instrument measuring individual differences in empathizing (the drive to identify and respond to mental states) and systemizing (the drive to analyze and construct rule-based systems).
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Empathizing-Systemizing Test – EQ-SQ was developed by Simon Baron-Cohen, Sally Wheelwright (2004). It is designed to measure Empathizing and Systemizing. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 120 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Empathizing (EQ), Systemizing (SQ), Filler/Control.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Empathizing (EQ) | 4,11,13,14,16,19,21,23,26,27,28,29,31,39,52,53,54,57,65,66,67,68,71,73,74,85,86,92,94,96,97,104,105,109,110,114,115,116,118 | 39 |
| Systemizing (SQ) | 2,7,10,15,18,20,30,32,33,34,35,37,43,45,48,50,51,55,59,61,63,69,70,75,76,77,79,81,82,84,90,91,93,98,99,103,106,107,111,117,120 | 41 |
| Filler/Control | 1,3,5,6,8,9,12,17,22,24,25,36,38,40,41,42,44,46,47,49,56,58,60,62,64,72,78,80,83,87,88,89,95,100,101,102,108,112,113,119 | 40 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 4-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 4 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 35 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Empathizing / Low Systemizing: 0 – 32
- Average Empathizing / Average Systemizing: 33 – 52
- Above Average Empathizing / Above Average Systemizing: 53 – 80
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha > 0.85 for both EQ and SQ scales).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
